PERSONAL AND COMMERCIAL WORK

This photograph evolved from a commercial assignment—which can often happen if the model is willing. However, photographers must be able to differentiate between the personal and commercial work, and be responsible for meeting the client’s needs first. Marcos was a pretty cool-looking guy and I wanted to bring that across, through his expression and pose, and in the lighting. For even light on both arms, I placed the main light over the lens. A reflector under the chin, common in beauty headshots, defined his chin and lips, while two skimmers and a hair light provided separation. I also used a background light that outlined the model’s whole body and gave a theatrical look to the image.
